Monthly investment needed

$1,316.88

To reach $1,000,000 in 20 years at 10%, you’d need to invest $1,317 per month.

10% is roughly the S&P 500’s historical annual average over several decades. Past performance does not guarantee future returns. This estimate excludes fees, taxes and inflation.

Why it matters

A big investment goal is easier to think about when it becomes a monthly contribution. This projection lets you compare a target balance with a timeline and a hypothetical annual return. It is a mathematical scenario, not a forecast of market performance or a recommendation to buy any investment.

How it works

Choose $100,000, $500,000, $1 million or $5 million, then adjust the annual return and years. The calculation assumes you start from zero and contribute the same amount at the end of every month. Returns compound monthly at a constant rate. A zero return simply divides the target by the number of months.

A worked example

For example, reaching $1 million over 20 years at an assumed 10% annual return requires about $1,317 per month. At zero return, it requires about $4,167 monthly. Markets do not deliver smooth monthly growth, and taxes, fees and inflation reduce purchasing power. The S&P 500’s historical average does not guarantee future results. Compare several assumptions and choose an amount your budget can sustain.
