Sales tax is estimated on the full vehicle price; trade-in tax credits vary by location. Total cost includes down payment and trade-in value.

Why it matters

Before choosing a vehicle, compare both the monthly payment and the full financing cost. A longer loan spreads the balance over more months, but interest keeps accumulating. Keeping the total cost visible can help you compare offers without focusing only on a payment that fits today.

How it works

Enter vehicle price, cash down payment, trade-in value, sales tax and APR. Choose a term from 24 to 84 months. The calculator adds tax to the price and subtracts down payment and trade-in value before estimating payments. It assumes a fixed interest rate and equal monthly installments.

A worked example

For example, a $35,000 car with $5,000 down, a $3,000 trade-in and 7% sales tax creates a $29,450 financed balance. Try a 60-month term and then 72 months to compare interest costs. Actual trade-in tax credits depend on location, and dealer fees are not included. Ask your lender for a complete written breakdown before agreeing to financing.
