Tip Income Tax Set-Aside Calculator
Build a buffer for taxes on your tips.
Why it matters
Tips are income, and withholding may not fully cover what you eventually owe. Setting aside a portion as you earn can make tax time less stressful. This tool is a simple reserve estimate for service workers, not a calculation of your final federal, state or local tax bill.
How it works
Enter total tip income for your selected year and choose the percentage you want to reserve. The default is 15%, matching the Service Industry tab. The estimate multiplies tip income by that percentage. Wages are excluded here because this tool is specifically about cash and card tip income.
A worked example
For example, $12,000 of tips at a 15% reserve rate suggests putting aside $1,800. If withholding already covers some of your tax, the right reserve may be different. Cash tips can be under-reported or under-withheld, including for W-2 employees. Keep accurate records, review pay stubs and consult a qualified professional about reporting and withholding. Nothing entered on this public calculator is saved or sent to an account.
